Pink Cones Appear on Spruces in St. Petersburg

Residents of St. Petersburg have recently observed unusual pink cones on spruce trees. These vibrant cones are young female cones, known as macrostrobiles, of the common spruce.

The Northwestern Interregional Department of Rosprirodnadzor clarified that the pink hue is a natural variation and not influenced by weather conditions. The color is genetically determined.

Spruces, like other pine family members, are monoecious, meaning a single tree possesses both male and female reproductive organs. The male organs appear as yellowish spikelets, while the female organs develop into the cones from which seeds are produced.

The presence of pink cones is frequently associated with the red-cone form of spruce. Scientists believe that the darker pigmentation facilitates enhanced heat absorption, particularly beneficial in northern climates.

Before pollination occurs, these cones are oriented upwards, with their scales open to receive pollen.
