Pianist Ekaterina Viktorova to Perform on Icebreaker Krasin Deck

A unique concert-lecture, “Music That Conquered Time,” is scheduled for August 9th on the deck of the historic icebreaker “Krasin,” featuring pianist Ekaterina Viktorova. This event marks the first time an acoustic grand piano has been brought aboard the 108-year-old vessel specifically for a musical performance.

The concert commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory and the 50th anniversary of composer Dmitry Shostakovich’s death. The program includes pieces by Shostakovich, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Bach-Busoni.

Viktorova, a laureate of international competitions, music researcher, and graduate of the Gnesins Russian Academy of Music, shared that the idea for the concert arose from her expedition to the North Pole and Franz Josef Land on the nuclear icebreaker “50 Years of Victory.”

Viktorova aims to combine her love for music and the Arctic through this performance. The concert will feature insights into connections between the music and lives of composers and polar explorers.

One notable parallel Viktorova will explore is the connection between Shostakovich and polar explorer Rudolf Samoilovich. Samoilovich led the “Krasin” icebreaker’s rescue mission for Umberto Nobile’s aeronauts in 1928.

The concert begins at 6:30 PM and is open to audiences aged 12 and older. The event is intended to be both enjoyable and educational, offering music in the open air on the deck of the historic icebreaker.
