Peter’s Fast in 2025: Timing, Diet, and Traditions Explained

Peter’s Fast in 2025 will begin on June 16 and end on July 11. This period of abstinence, also known as the Apostles’ Fast or Peter and Paul Fast, is dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul, commemorating their abstinence before missionary work.

The duration of Peter’s Fast varies annually, ranging from 8 to 42 days, as its start date is tied to the second Monday after the Holy Trinity. In 2025, Trinity falls on June 8, making the fast 25 days long. The fast always concludes on the eve of the Day of Peter and Paul, celebrated on July 12.

Peter’s Fast is considered less strict than other fasts. The primary dietary restrictions involve abstaining from meat, milk, and eggs, as well as foods prepared with these ingredients. Alcohol and other unhealthy habits are also discouraged, although wine is permitted on weekends and temple holidays.

Fish is generally allowed throughout the fast, except on Wednesdays and Fridays, which are observed as the strictest days. On these days, even vegetable oil is prohibited, making lean cabbage soup, lean okroshka, and botvinya popular meal choices.

Preparing for Peter’s Fast involves gradually reducing the consumption of meat and dairy products and increasing the intake of fruits and vegetables. Incorporating bran into the diet beforehand can also aid digestion due to its high fiber content. Adequate water intake is essential for overall digestive health. Individuals with chronic illnesses or gastrointestinal issues should consult a doctor before fasting.

Certain groups are often exempt from strict fasting, including pregnant and breastfeeding women, military personnel, students, and those engaged in heavy labor. Young children are also generally advised against strict fasting to ensure proper development.

Peter’s Fast is accompanied by several traditions. It is customary to bake fish pies on the days of remembrance of saints that occur during the fast. Marriages are discouraged during this period, and activities like needlework and haircuts are traditionally avoided. Maintaining harmonious relationships with loved ones and preparing for the Day of Peter and Paul by cleaning the house are also important aspects of the fast.
