Crowds of pedestrians are reportedly walking on the roadway near the Nevsky Prospekt metro station in St. Petersburg, ignoring traffic signals and posing a potential safety hazard. The issue is particularly acute in the evening when street musicians attract large gatherings.
During the day, the area near the Griboyedov Canal is relatively quiet. However, as evening approaches, street musicians begin performing near the metro station, drawing crowds of listeners. The influx of people often spills onto the roadway, forcing pedestrians to navigate around them while cars are passing.
A reader of Fontanka shared a recording on June 11 showing people walking on the roadway, disregarding both the red traffic light and the vehicular traffic.
The situation raises concerns about pedestrian safety in the area. Malaya Konyushennaya, a street near the Griboyedov Canal that was once used by road transport, was converted into a pedestrian zone in 1997.
