Over 60% of Russians are overweight, negatively impacting the nation’s economy, quality of life, life expectancy, and reproductive capabilities, according to State Duma deputy Irina Filatova.
Filatova highlighted the connection between obesity and the rise in diabetes cases, noting that the number of patients with diabetes has almost doubled in the last 15 years. Approximately 52% of deaths are related to diabetes and associated diseases, posing a significant threat to Russia’s demographics and economy.
Health Minister Mikhail Murashko stated that medical examinations reveal that every fourth person seeking medical attention has a risk factor associated with poor nutrition. One in five individuals is overweight, and one in ten is diagnosed with obesity. These statistics only account for those who undergo medical examinations.
A 2023 study projects a significant increase in the global economic consequences of obesity and overweight. By 2035, these consequences are expected to more than double, reaching $4.27 trillion, compared to 2020 levels, due to the increasing prevalence of the condition.
Bloomberg reports that the costs associated with treating obesity and overweight, along with the impact of a high body mass index on economic productivity, amount to approximately 2.9% of global GDP.
