Over 308,000 IT Crimes Recorded in Russia from January to May 2025

Russian authorities report a significant surge in IT crime, with over 308,000 incidents recorded between January and May 2025. The financial impact of these crimes has exceeded 81 billion rubles.

Deputy Head of the Investigative Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Danil Filippov, announced these figures at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Wednesday, June 18.

The majority of these IT crimes involve remote theft and fraud, with over 198,000 cases reported.

Filippov noted a slight decrease in cybercriminal activity in the first four months of the year. However, the activity stabilized in May, reaching a plateau. The future trend will depend on implemented laws, practical measures, and activities undertaken.

Approximately 16 billion rubles held in the accounts of cyber fraudsters have been seized since the beginning of the year.

Filippov stressed that combating IT crime effectively requires a comprehensive approach. This includes protecting companies’ IT infrastructure, safeguarding personal data, and ensuring active information interaction with the public. He emphasized that compliance with the law by all market participants, including businesses and citizens, is crucial for these measures to be effective.
