Oryol Region Discusses Tariff Revisions with Telecom Operators Amid Internet Restrictions

Authorities in the Oryol region are engaging in discussions with telecom operators to potentially revise tariffs in response to ongoing mobile internet restrictions. This announcement was made by the region’s governor, Andrei Klychkov.

The internet disruptions are primarily attributed to security concerns, as the region is situated on a potential drone flight path. Officials fear that the network could be exploited by adversaries to control unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Klychkov emphasized the evolving nature of threats, stating that the “enemy is improving and trying to find opportunities to bypass all the restrictions of the electronic warfare system.”

The governor acknowledged that the restrictions extend beyond the Oryol region, affecting several other areas. As a countermeasure, authorities are actively working to establish Wi-Fi hotspots in public areas to mitigate the impact on residents.

While the process of tariff revision is expected to be gradual, Klychkov assured residents that it is currently being addressed. He appealed for understanding and pledged to restore internet access as soon as the security threat subsides.

Recent weeks have seen widespread internet shutdowns across Russia, impacting various services, including banking, transportation, and retail operations. The Kremlin has consistently maintained that these disruptions are security-related and a necessary precaution.
