Ongoing Magnetic Storm Could Set Record for Current Solar Cycle

A prolonged magnetic storm, exceeding 50 hours, continues to affect Earth and may set a record for the current solar cycle. According to a June 3rd report from the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the IKI RAN and ISZF SO RAN, the storm, while weakening, is being sustained by the configuration of the interplanetary magnetic field.

Earlier today, at 9 a.m., fluctuations near the G3 level (strong) were recorded. Despite the high rating, other solar wind parameters are returning to normal.

Currently, the plasma temperature surrounding Earth is around 100,000 degrees, a significant drop from its peak of 3 million degrees or more. The solar wind speed remains elevated at 600 km/s, 1.5 times the normal rate, but significantly lower than its peak. The density has occasionally dipped below 1 proton per cubic centimeter, which is less than normal.

Astronomers express cautious optimism about the storm’s imminent end, noting that similar expectations arose yesterday afternoon, but the storm persisted. The strong magnetic storm initially began on Thursday and continued for over a day. Another, even more powerful storm followed on Sunday. Although its intensity decreased yesterday, it rebounded shortly thereafter.
