A person has died in a large fire that engulfed a high-rise building in Balashikha, Moscow region, on Thursday, July 31. The fire, which spread across 400 square meters, prompted a large response from emergency services who are currently evacuating residents.

The blaze broke out in an apartment on the top floor of the building on Flerov Street and quickly spread to the roof and a neighboring apartment. Eyewitnesses reported that a man on a balcony, attempting to escape, fell unconscious.

Locals reported that the streets surrounding the building were blocked off as firefighters worked to contain the fire. Images and videos shared online show smoke billowing from all sides of the building.

The Moscow Regional Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
