Olya Baranova Needs Medication to Lower Pulmonary Hypertension Before Heart Transplant

Eighteen-year-old Olya Baranova requires urgent medication to lower the pressure in her pulmonary artery as she awaits a lung and heart transplant. This is her only chance for survival, but the cost of the necessary drugs is 228,000 rubles, a sum her family cannot afford.

Olya suffers from a severe congenital heart defect that resulted in high pulmonary hypertension. The high pressure in her pulmonary artery is a critical obstacle to the transplant. The pressure, far exceeding the normal range, causes blood to flood the heart, increasing the risk of cardiac arrest and preventing her from performing basic physical activities.

Doctors initially believed she could live with the heart defect but, as she grew, Olya experienced developmental delays, choking, and cyanosis, preventing her from walking or climbing stairs. Her condition has led to homeschooling, constant low saturation, breathlessness, swelling, and blue lips and fingers, all signs of acute heart and lung failure.

During her recent hospitalization, doctors prescribed medications to lower the pressure in her pulmonary artery and reduce the strain on her heart. While these medications were initially provided, the supply has recently stopped. Interrupting this therapy could be fatal.

Olya’s family, consisting of her mother, grandmother, and disabled older sister, relies solely on pensions and cannot afford to purchase the required medication. Her mother has been trying to obtain the drugs from the Department of Health without success. The St. Petersburg charitable foundation “Natasha” has stepped in to help Olya by opening a fundraiser.
