Novosibirsk Scientist Developing Innovative Materials for Environmental Solutions

Artem Poryvaev, a senior researcher at the International Tomography Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS), is developing “smart sponges” – advanced sorbents with applications in air and fuel purification, as well as plastic production. His work aims to address critical environmental challenges and promote the transition to cleaner energy sources.

The development of sorbents has the potential to revolutionize various industries, including transportation and fuel. The fuel industry requires solutions for oil refining to meet “Euro-4” and “Euro-5” fuel standards, while the chemical industry seeks advancements in plastic production. Sorbents offer ready-made solutions for these needs.

One significant application of sorbents is in enabling the wider adoption of methane as a fuel source. By increasing the amount of methane that can be stored in a container, sorbents can significantly extend the range of methane-powered vehicles and facilitate the establishment of more refueling stations.

Poryvaev’s team has also achieved a breakthrough in hydrogen liquefaction. They have patented a catalyst that is significantly more active than existing commercial options, paving the way for safer and more efficient hydrogen storage and transportation. Hydrogen is considered the most environmentally friendly fuel, producing only water when burned. The team is actively seeking an industrial partner to implement this catalyst in production.

Funding for Poryvaev’s laboratory primarily comes from grants from organizations like the Russian Science Foundation (RSF) and the Innovation Promotion Fund. The laboratory prioritizes the involvement of young scientists, with 100% of its researchers being under 39 years old. This is fostered through close collaboration with universities, where students are trained and invited to participate in research projects.

While the economic viability of certain applications, such as waste incineration or greenhouse gas collection, remains a challenge, Poryvaev emphasizes the ongoing progress in science and the potential for future solutions. He believes that increased state support and funding are crucial for advancing these efforts.
