Novosibirsk is developing its riverfront areas, creating landscaped embankments along the Ob River. While currently, only Mikhailovskaya Embankment is widely known, the city boasts over ten such areas, with more planned for the future.
Several new embankments have been developed in recent years, offering residents new perspectives and recreational spaces along the river. These projects vary in design and amenities, catering to different needs and preferences.
The Savva Kozhevnikova Street embankment is currently under construction, with plans for lawns, playgrounds, sports areas, and river access by July 26. The “Venice” residential complex features a simple yet functional embankment with a paved walkway and concrete wall, suitable for walking, jogging, and enjoying the river view. “Yasny Bereg” offers a more modern design with stepped benches, overhanging bridges, and unique views of the port, railway bridge, and Dimitrovsky Bridge area. The “European Shore” embankment, built without public funds, stands out for its multi-level paths, landscaping, thematic zones, cafes, and shops.
The “Marseille” residential complex has an embankment within its gated community, offering benches, a platform over the water, lawns, trees, and evening lighting with views of the left bank. The “Aquamarine” residential complex features a less luxurious but still appealing private coastal area with unique views of the right-bank Novosibirsk skyline. “Arena” Park provides an organized space by the water, allowing visitors to observe wildlife, admire new buildings, or relax by the river. Mikhailovskaya Embankment has become a popular city center alternative for recreation and dining with river views.
The area near the ApartRiver complex extends Mikhailovskaya Embankment, showcasing a “soaring bridge” and landscaping. The ObGES microdistrict features the city’s oldest embankment, retaining its original seaside town charm after recent renovations. “Kamenka” Park, while not fully completed, offers unusual “soaring” bridges over the Kamenka River. “Yeltsovsky” Park, a small park on the 1st Yeltsovka River, demonstrates how to revitalize smaller rivers in the city.
Additional embankments are planned along 2nd Sukharnaya Street and the Inya River. A major challenge is accessibility, with the opening of the Sportivnaya metro station delayed and Bolshevikskaya Street often congested.
