Muslims in Yekaterinburg celebrate Eid al-Adha

Muslims in Yekaterinburg gathered near the mosque in the South-West to celebrate Eid al-Adha on the morning of June 6. This is one of the most important Islamic holidays.

Believers started arriving at the mosque as early as 5 a.m. on Thursday. Due to the large number of attendees, the temple could not accommodate everyone, resulting in people filling the courtyard and nearby streets to perform the morning prayer, which holds great significance on Eid al-Adha.

To maintain order and ensure the safety of the believers, law enforcement monitored the area, and two streets, Zavodskaya and Repin, were temporarily closed to traffic. The streets were reopened after 6 a.m.

Eid al-Adha is a three-day holiday that begins with the sacrifice of a ram on the first day. For the following two days, believers visit each other and share meals. The tradition of sacrifice originates from the Koran, where Allah commanded the prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son. However, at the last moment, the angel Jibrail replaced the child with a ram, allowing the prophet to fulfill Allah’s command and demonstrate his devotion without harming his child. Since then, Muslims have performed sacrifices annually to commemorate this event.

In some regions of Russia, a day off was declared in honor of Eid al-Adha.
