Yekaterinburg is currently experiencing a significant surge in mosquito activity, with residents reporting widespread infestations in both urban and suburban areas. The peak of this mosquito invasion is expected to last until the beginning of July, after which their numbers should noticeably decline.
Experts attribute the high mosquito population to favorable weather conditions during the spring. Increased rainfall led to more puddles, flooded areas, and higher water levels, creating ideal breeding grounds for mosquito larvae. The recent heatwave has further accelerated the development of these larvae, leading to a rapid increase in the adult mosquito population.
The most effective ways to avoid mosquito bites during this period include wearing closed, light-colored clothing (as dark clothing attracts mosquitoes), using repellents, and wearing headgear with mosquito nets, especially when visiting gardens or forests. Individuals with allergies are advised to avoid forested areas until the end of June to minimize the risk of bites.
Mosquito activity is influenced by seasonal dynamics, with a large initial emergence in early June followed by a decrease as many species lay eggs and die. Subsequent species emerge later in the summer, but in smaller numbers. Yekaterinburg and its surrounding areas are home to over 30 species of mosquitoes.
Researchers have also noted that certain factors can make individuals more attractive to mosquitoes. These factors include pregnancy (due to increased body temperature and exhaled air volume) and beer consumption.
