A majority of Muscovites have voiced their preference for preserving the Moscow monorail, despite government proposals to transform it into an elevated park. This sentiment was expressed in response to the city’s consideration of converting the monorail into a 40,000-square-meter green space six meters above ground, featuring walking paths, a running track, and recreation areas.
The proposed park aims to attract 20,000 visitors daily. City officials sought public opinion on the project through the “Active Citizen” website.
Many residents believe the monorail is a convenient mode of transport with scenic views. They argue that its perceived ineffectiveness stems from infrequent service, slow speeds, and limited operating hours, suggesting that improving its functionality would increase ridership.
Critics of the reconstruction plan accuse officials of prioritizing budget spending over practical solutions. They argue that restoring the monorail to proper working order, including addressing issues like track alignment and train frequency, would be a more sensible approach.
Some residents offered alternative suggestions, such as rebuilding the tram line to improve connectivity between districts, while others questioned the need for another unnecessary project. The survey regarding the monorail’s fate is scheduled to conclude on June 8, 2025.
