Moscow Region to Halve Number of Newspaper Kiosks

Authorities in the Moscow region are planning to significantly reduce the number of newspaper and magazine kiosks, with a projected halving of these outlets by 2026. This initiative has sparked concern among residents who rely on these kiosks for information and publishers who depend on them for distribution.

The reduction is part of a broader effort that has seen the demolition of various kiosks, including those selling newspapers and magazines. According to Tatyana Parshkova, General Director of MK-APP LLC, only about 200 kiosks may remain in the entire region, potentially combined with local bakery products.

Many residents have voiced their opposition to the plan, arguing that printed media remains important, particularly for those who prefer it over digital sources. One resident stated that depriving people, especially the elderly, of their usual source of information is “the height of arrogance and inhumanity.” Another reader complained about the aggressive introduction of digitalization into life and the transformation of libraries into leisure areas, while one more was wondering if flower stalls will start to sell fast food as well.

Readers emphasize that kiosks are crucial not only for readers but also for publishers, providing a vital distribution channel for their products. Concerns were raised about where publishing houses will send their goods and the kiosks’ role in providing necessary stationery items.

While some support the demolition of newspaper kiosks, citing the availability of information online, others argue that printed publications remain popular in places like the USA and Europe. The situation has been ongoing since the beginning of the year.
