Moscow Pediatrician Under House Arrest Amid Bribery Investigation

Anastasia Goryainova, a Moscow pediatrician specializing in cystic fibrosis, has returned home under house arrest following a month in a Chita pre-trial detention center related to a bribery case. Despite her return, she remains under investigation and faces restrictions, according to her sister, Sofia.

Goryainova is prohibited from working, her accounts are blocked, and she faces restrictions on communication, including internet access. Her sister has expressed concern about how Anastasia is supposed to support herself and her child under these conditions.

Sofia reports that Anastasia’s health deteriorated significantly due to the conditions in the detention center. She was even referred to a specialized medical center while still detained, but never received the treatment. The family is now seeking permission for hospitalization due to her declining health.

The bribery accusations stem from an alleged payment made last year to the head of an Accreditation Center in Chita to obtain a certificate of professional development remotely. Relatives claim Goryainova was coerced into confessing after being threatened with the possibility of her 14-year-old daughter being taken to an orphanage.

Her defense maintains that she paid for, completed, and received a diploma for the course, after confirming that the center had the proper licenses. Initially summoned as a witness in Chita, her status was changed to that of the accused. She spent two months under house arrest in a Chita lawyer’s apartment, followed by a month in a pre-trial detention center. A court overturned the initial decision on June 5, leading to her release to Moscow under house arrest.
