Moscow Monorail Closes After Years of Unprofitability

The Moscow monorail officially ceased operations on June 28th. The fate of metro line 13 was decided by residents.

The construction of the monorail, conceived in 2004, was divided into two stages with the first stage involved a line from the Timiryazevskaya metro station to VDNKh. The second stage was planned to extend to the Botanical Garden station, but this extension was never built.

The monorail became part of the Moscow Metro system, designated as branch number 13 on the map. Over 6 billion rubles were spent on the project.

In 2012, Moscow authorities stated that the monorail project did not justify itself due to unprofitability. Despite this, then-Deputy Mayor Maxim Liksutov initially stated that there were no reasons to close the monorail due to transport infrastructure needs. Dmitry Gaev, the head of the metro at the time, called the line experimental and said it would not be developed further.

By 2018, officials began suggesting transforming the monorail into a park. In 2020, reports of its potential closure emerged. Part of the overpass will be dismantled, and a park is scheduled to open in its place at a height in 2027.
