Moscow Metro’s Sokolnicheskaya Line to Extend to Losiny Ostrov National Park

The Sokolnicheskaya metro line in Moscow is planned to extend into the northeast of the city, reaching the Losiny Ostrov National Park with the addition of two new stations, “MGSU” and “Yaroslavskaya.” This expansion aims to significantly improve transport accessibility for residents of the Yaroslavsky district.

Currently, residents of the Yaroslavsky district face travel times of up to 30 minutes during peak hours to reach the nearest metro station, “VDNKh,” on the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya line. The new stations are projected to reduce pedestrian access time for residents in nearby houses to just 5-10 minutes.

The Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Urban Development Policy and Construction, Vladimir Efimov, highlighted the positive impact of the project on the lives of the citizens.

The discussion about extending the metro line to the Yaroslavsky district has been ongoing for a considerable time. A diagram showing the proposed locations of the new stations surfaced online in 2024. One of the stations, “MGSU,” is expected to be located near the building on Veshnikh Vod Street, 4s33, close to the Losiny Ostrov National Park, a specially protected area.

The Yaroslavsky district has a population of approximately 100,000 people. Despite apartments having been allocated to metro builders in Soviet times, some parts of the district are located about 6–7 kilometers away from the nearest metro stations (“VDNKh,” “Botanichesky Sad”). As an alternative, residents rely on the often overcrowded electric trains of the Yaroslavl direction.

While the Department of Construction previously indicated that the line extension was not included in the current Moscow Metro development program, recent developments suggest a renewed focus on the project.

Another potential solution to the transportation challenges in the area is the construction of the MCD-5, which would connect Mytishchi, Pushkino, Korolev, Shchelkovo, and Fryazino in the Moscow region on one side, with Domodedovo and Vidnoye on the other. This project would also include the Losinoostrovskaya railway station, which is nearest to MGSU. However, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has described this project as “extremely complex” due to the need to dig a tunnel under the center of Moscow in Kitai-Gorod to connect the Yaroslavl and Paveletsky directions. In 2024, Moskomarkhitektura suspended the design of the underground section of the MCD-5 and the renovation of the platforms of the Paveletsky and Yaroslavl directions in Moscow, citing high costs, track construction, and the organization of underground transfers as reasons. Despite these challenges, large-scale renovations are planned at the stations of the Yaroslavl and Paveletsky directions, potentially paving the way for their inclusion in the MCD-5 line.
