Moscow Metro to Receive New Turnstiles for Faster Passenger Entry

The Moscow Metro will install 4,500 new turnstiles by 2031 to improve passenger flow. The initiative, costing 12.5 billion rubles, aims to modernize entry points across the subway, MCC, and MCD stations.

The new turnstiles are designed to be significantly narrower, only 12.5 centimeters wide, allowing for more units to be installed in station lobbies and increasing overall throughput.

Each turnstile can process 15 to 30 people per minute, with a free-passage mode accommodating 60 people. They will feature prominent visual and auditory cues, including a full-height green light strip and vibration feedback for visually impaired passengers, along with an alarm for unauthorized entry.

These turnstiles will also have reversible operation for entry and exit in both directions. They will support existing features like biometric payment, ticket validation against stop lists, and deferred Troika card balance updates.

The contract stipulates that the chosen supplier must establish turnstile production in Moscow, investing at least 500 million rubles within 18 months of the contract. The selection process is currently underway.
