Moose Antler Dueling Practice Begins Before Antlers Fully Harden

Early sparring matches have been observed among male moose in the Leningrad region, despite their antlers still being in a vulnerable, developing state. Biologist Pavel Glazkov shared a video of these interactions from the Vsevolozhsky district.

The antlers, currently covered in a delicate velvety skin, are susceptible to damage. The moose are notably cautious, avoiding contact with their antlers during these early training sessions to prevent injury. Damage at this stage can lead to deformities in the antlers’ final shape, reducing their attractiveness.

The antlers are expected to fully ossify by the end of August, marking the start of the moose rut, their mating season. These current sparring matches serve as preparation for the intense battles that will occur when the moose compete for mating rights.

Although the antlers are still tender, the male moose have commenced practicing their duel techniques. According to Glazkov, it is remarkable how sensitive the moose are to the size of their antlers and how carefully they maneuver to avoid touching them during this delicate phase. The actual confrontations for the opportunity to reproduce will commence in the near future.
