A major fire in St. Petersburg on June 3 in the Y.Y. Smirnov building on the Obvodny Canal embankment resulted in two fatalities. The blaze, which started in a three-room apartment, quickly spread and required a significant response from emergency services.
The fire broke out at approximately 13:30 in an apartment located at building 183 on the Obvodny Canal embankment. The fire encompassed 45 square meters within the 130-square-meter apartment and further extended to 65 square meters of scaffolding on the building’s facade.
Firefighters successfully contained the fire by 14:12, less than an hour after it began. By 15:23, the open flames were completely extinguished.
During the rescue operation, 15 individuals, including one child, were evacuated from the building. Tragically, the bodies of two deceased individuals were discovered during a subsequent inspection of the affected area.
A total of 27 rescuers and 7 pieces of special equipment were deployed to combat the fire. The authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident.
