Linguistic changes, especially those in intermediate stages, reveal the influence of socio-cultural factors on language, a topic to be explored in a free lecture on June 14th at the Mayakovsky Library. The lecture, titled “Only extreme cases are clear in the language,” will be led by Andrei Yakovlev, head of the “Linguistics” department of RANEPA in St. Petersburg.
The discussion will focus on how languages, like English and Russian, evolve and simplify over time. While English has become a global language partly due to its simplified structure, Russian, known for its complexity, is also undergoing simplification.
The lecture will delve into specific examples of linguistic changes, such as the reduction in the number of cases in Russian. Historically, Russian speakers used attributive, partitive, locative, and explanatory cases, which have now largely merged into the genitive or prepositional cases.
The event will take place at Mayakovka, located at Fontanka River Embankment, 44, in the Media Hall, and is scheduled to begin at 4:30 PM. This lecture is intended for audiences aged 16 and older.
