Lenin’s Mausoleum on Red Square to Close for Two-Year Restoration

Lenin’s Mausoleum on Red Square will be closed for restoration for two years, according to information from the public procurement portal, with the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation having finalized a contract for the work. The deadline for the contract is June 19, 2027.

The restoration project, costing 19.6 million rubles, includes not only restoration work but also emergency repairs and adaptation of the building for modern use. The overall technical condition of the mausoleum is considered “limitedly operational”, with some walls in critical condition, according to a historical and cultural assessment conducted last year.

Built in 1930, Lenin’s Mausoleum is a three-story structure, including an underground level, encompassing nearly 3.2 thousand square meters. The last time the mausoleum underwent restoration was in the fall of 2012, with the repairs lasting six months.

Identified issues include the separation of facing slabs from load-bearing walls, biodeterioration on covering slabs due to inadequate ventilation, movement of frame structures, and peeling paint on external walls and covering slabs.

The restoration contract has been awarded to GC “EKS”, a major construction company that has previously worked on projects such as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, the Botkin Hospital, the Spartak Tennis Center, the Druzhba sports arena in Luzhniki, and the presidential lyceum at the Sirius educational center in Sochi.
