The Mausoleum of Vladimir Lenin on Red Square is currently experiencing high visitor volume as it prepares to close for a two-year restoration. Hundreds of people, including Muscovites and tourists, are queuing to visit the tomb before the building undergoes extensive repairs.
The Federal Protective Service (FSO) reports that the Mausoleum is still operating on its regular schedule, open five days a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and weekends) from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The exact closing date for the restoration has not yet been announced.
The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation has contracted the restoration work, estimated to cost 19.6 million rubles. A recent examination of the building identified several issues, including the separation of facing slabs, biodeterioration due to poor ventilation, movement of frame structures, and peeling paint. Some walls have been deemed to be in critical condition.
Visitors can access the Mausoleum from the Nikolskaya Tower side, where metal detectors and security checkpoints have been installed. Queues are moving slowly, with frames for visitors installed to manage the flow.
Red Square is also preparing for Russia Day celebrations, with a large concert planned for June 11.
