July Weather Comparison: St. Petersburg vs Moscow

Moscow experienced significantly more rainfall than St. Petersburg in July, with the capital exceeding its monthly precipitation norm by 134%. St. Petersburg, in contrast, received only 66% of its average July rainfall.

The data, provided by Mikhail Leus, a leading specialist at the Phobos Center, indicates that Moscow accumulated 113 mm of precipitation, while St. Petersburg received 54 mm as of July 30th.

Moscow faced several days of severe weather in July, including a squally wind and heavy downpours on July 24th and intense rainfall on July 22nd. The heavy rains caused flooding in the capital, disrupting traffic and daily life. Vehicles were seen navigating flooded streets, the metro experienced interruptions, and pedestrians struggled to cross roads submerged in ankle-deep water.

Meanwhile, St. Petersburg experienced hot and dry weather throughout July, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. The city even recorded its warmest night of the year on July 30th. Due to the abnormally high temperatures, an “orange” level of danger was declared in St. Petersburg.

Leus noted that the different climates of the two cities should be considered when comparing rainfall amounts. St. Petersburg has a temperate climate, transitioning from continental to maritime, while Moscow has a moderately continental climate.
