Jeff Monson: From American Fighter to Russian Citizen

Jeff Monson, the former American mixed martial arts fighter, grappling and Jiu-Jitsu world champion, has made Russia his home, living in Ufa since 2018. He married a Russian woman and established free sports schools nationwide.

Monson’s connection to Russia extends beyond sports, as he recently starred in the film “Aldan,” alongside Dmitry Dyuzhev and Ivan Okhlobystin.

Monson expressed his appreciation for Siberia’s nature, kind people, and comfortable climate, drawing parallels to his home state of Minnesota. He has visited Siberia to conduct master classes and participate in fighting tournaments.

The nickname “Snowman” originated during a World Championship in Dubai, where his unexpected victories earned him the moniker due to his growing presence in the competition.

Monson’s affinity for Russia began in his childhood, inspired by Soviet athletes and later fueled by an interest in Russian history. He criticized US foreign policy and embraced Russia as an alternative to the West.

In 2023, he renounced his US citizenship, a decision that sparked debate but was seen by many in Russia as a sign of sincerity. He initially perceived Russians as harsh and closed, but his impressions changed as he became more familiar with the culture and people.

Monson’s decision to live in Russia was solidified during a trip to Penza, where an encounter with a craftsman offering an icon for his ailing mother deeply moved him.

Monson now focuses on opening sports schools, with 27 locations in various regions, where children can train in Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling for free. He emphasizes fun, sportsmanship, and gratitude for the opportunity to participate in sports.

Monson, who once idolized Fedor Emelianenko, befriended him after their fight. He admires Emelianenko’s character and sportsmanship.

He last engaged in a street fight at the age of seven, now focusing on sportsmanship and acknowledging that victory or defeat is his own responsibility.

Monson’s acceptance of Russia includes learning the language, participating in local initiatives, and a desire to be needed in the country.
