Injured Swans Survive Poaching Attack and Find Refuge

Two swans injured in a poaching incident near Gatchina have survived and been relocated to the “Sirin” wild animal rescue center. The incident occurred on April 19 in the village of Novy Svet, Gatchina district, Leningrad region, and resulted in injuries to two red-listed birds.

Following the attack, the swans were rescued by volunteer Elena and the “Koshkospas” rescue team, who transported them to the “Sirin” center.

Although the birds received treatment, they sustained permanent injuries. The female swan required a wing amputation, and the male swan has irremovable shrapnel in his body.

Despite their injuries, the swans’ condition improved enough for them to be moved to Putilovo, where they now have access to a pond for swimming. The rescue center is actively seeking a suitable permanent location for the swans, considering their specific needs and the necessary veterinary care.

The “Sirin” center reported that one of the shot swans was initially in serious condition with an amputated wing, while the other was at risk of lead poisoning. The center has shared a video on social media depicting the scene of the poaching.
