Gazprom Neft Geophysicist Creates Music Album from Seismic Wave Recordings

Gazprom Neft will present the multimedia art project “Terrabyte” at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, offering a virtual journey into the Earth’s interior. The project aims to provide a visual representation of digital geological research data.

Alexander Butorin, a geophysicist from Gazprom Neft, has created the first music album using recordings of seismic waves. The album, titled “Energy of the Earth’s Interior,” transforms physical data from the Yety-Purovskoye oil field into musical compositions using artificial intelligence.

Butorin was inspired by digital tools that aid in studying the Earth’s interior at depths of up to three kilometers. The album includes seven tracks with geological names such as “Geoacoustics,” “Seismophony,” and “Magnetic Rhythm.”

The total duration of the album is just over an hour. Butorin envisions the lounge and ambient-style music as suitable for yoga or meditation, designed to help listeners recharge with the Earth’s energy and restore inner harmony.

The album also features an extra track containing the untreated sounds of oil, clay, sandstone, and other elements of geological formations.

Butorin created a simple program in Python to process and translate seismic recordings from an oil field in Yamal into sound. This allowed him to hear the sounds of oil, clay, and sandstone at a depth of several kilometers. He then used these noises to create melodies.
