Baikalsk, Irkutsk Oblast, mourned the loss of schoolchildren who died in a mass murder that occurred in the “Mountain Baikal” gardening association on May 28, with funerals for three of the four victims held today. The tragic event has prompted widespread grief and mourning in the community and surrounding areas.
The funerals took place at the Holy Trinity Church and a local ritual hall, drawing large crowds from across the Slyudyansky district, including attendees from the Olympic Reserve School in Irkutsk and Angarsk. An overwhelming number of mourners gathered to pay their respects, with some unable to fit inside the venues.
During the services, emotional scenes unfolded as friends, family, and community members struggled with the immense loss. Inconsolable crying filled the air, and medical assistance was required for several individuals overcome with grief. One schoolboy was heard expressing his disbelief and sorrow, asking, “Why are my friends dying?”
A memorial dinner was held at the local House of Culture, where attendees gathered to remember the victims. Amid the somber atmosphere, authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, including how the teenagers obtained alcohol.
The incident occurred during a birthday celebration where a 17-year-old allegedly attacked his peers with a knife. Four teenagers died at the scene, while four others managed to escape and are currently receiving treatment in an Irkutsk hospital. The suspect also died after setting fire to the house.
The fourth victim will be buried on June 3. Authorities have opened criminal cases related to murder, attempted murder, and the involvement of minors in antisocial activities. Two individuals have been detained in connection with the latter charge.
Mourning has been declared in Baikalsk and the Slyudyansky district.
