Pavel Nikolaevich Mishin, the engineer of passenger train No. 86 Klimov — Moscow, was laid to rest in Unecha on June 4 following his death on May 31 during the overpass explosion in the Vygonichsky district of the Bryansk region. His actions are credited with preventing a major catastrophe and saving hundreds of passengers.
The incident occurred on the evening of May 31 on the Pilshino – Vygonichi section in the Bryansk region, when a road bridge collapsed onto the Klimovo – Moscow passenger train after being undermined. Seven people died, and over 100 were injured.
According to the Unechsky district administration, as the road overpass collapsed in front of the moving train, Mishin immediately initiated emergency braking. He also ordered his assistant to evacuate the cabin and seek refuge in the engine room. The reduction in the train’s speed, resulting from Mishin’s quick thinking, played a crucial role in saving lives.
The funeral was attended by representatives from railway management, the Government of the Bryansk region, the administration of the Unechsky district, deputies of the Regional Duma, the district and city Council of People’s Deputies, veterans, colleagues, and residents of the city.
Authorities are investigating the incident as a terrorist attack, alleging that it was planned and executed under the direction of Ukraine.
A similar incident occurred a few hours later in the Kursk region on the Ostapovo – Mikhailovsky Rudnik section, where a bridge was also blown up, causing a freight train to derail. The driver and his two assistants sustained injuries in that incident.
