Oleg Myasnikov, the former Vice Mayor of Perm, has become a familiar face in Sobornaya Square, where he performs as a street musician. The 62-year-old sings romances, operettas, and Soviet hits every summer evening, captivating audiences with his performances. Myasnikov, who previously held the position of Vice Mayor in 2000-2001, shared his journey from politics to music and his connection with the city.
Myasnikov’s diverse background includes a stint as a model in the USSR during his time as a medical student. He later worked as an infectious disease doctor before entering politics, overseeing the health department, culture and art committee, and physical culture and sports committee as Vice Mayor. After leaving his official post, he directed the Pushkin House of Culture.
Since 2020, Myasnikov has been performing regularly in Sobornaya Square, a venue he chose to elevate the standard of street music in the city. Despite not having formal music training, he pursued vocal studies in his 50s, inspired by a professor at the Perm State Institute of Culture. He had always enjoyed singing, having been a soloist in his school choir and a laureate of student events.
Myasnikov’s performances attract a diverse audience, including former colleagues who are surprised by his career change. He begins each performance with “Why is the heart so troubled” from the film “True Friends,” and his repertoire includes hits from various generations, catering to both elderly listeners who appreciate classical pieces and younger individuals who offer enthusiastic support.
He operates a yearly Festival of Musical Meetings on Sobornaya. Other performers have joined him, and in 2021 he held the city’s first competition among street performers.
In August 2024, Myasnikov relocated to Moscow to be closer to his daughters while his wife remains in Perm. He continues to perform in Moscow concert halls, clubs, and restaurants during the autumn and winter months, even performing military songs at an event in the Moscow region.
Myasnikov has no plans to return to politics, preferring to focus on his creative pursuits. He maintains friendly relationships with some Perm deputies and occasionally sees former Mayor Arkady Kamenev. Although he misses his home and family in Perm, he is captivated by the vibrant atmosphere of Moscow.
