A demolished market in Yekaterinburg has remarkably reopened as a legally sanctioned fair, offering a temporary solution for local traders. The original market, located in VIZ, was razed in the spring of 2025 to make way for planned road construction.
The Yekaterinburg City Hall has designated the former market area as a seasonal fair, operating from June 7 to June 29. This move allows vendors to continue trading in the location despite the demolition.
While the area has been asphalted and now features tents adorned with city symbols instead of the original kiosks, local sellers report that they have been permitted to operate until the end of the summer.
The decision to reclassify the market came after officials removed the point of sale from the scheme of non-stationary retail facilities and included it in the scheme of fairs, which are directly controlled by the administration.
Traders have expressed mixed feelings, with some lamenting the eventual closure and relocation. One trader shared concerns about the profitability of alternative locations offered by the city.
The administration has stated that the fair status is a temporary measure, as the area is slated for complete reconstruction in the future. The demolition of the original market was part of a project approved in December 2023 to expand Tatishcheva Street, with completion of the roadwork scheduled for 2027. The reopening of the market as a fair offers a brief reprieve for traders and local shoppers.
