Florists Share Tips for Extending the Lifespan of Cut Flowers

To maximize the lifespan of cut flowers, proper stem preparation and consistent care are essential. Florists recommend trimming stems and ensuring they are submerged in clean water to prevent premature wilting.

The primary reason flowers deteriorate quickly is bacterial growth in the water. Bacteria obstruct the flower’s vascular system, hindering nutrient absorption and accelerating decay; thus, daily or every-other-day water changes are crucial.

While commercial flower-preserving powders are available, their effectiveness can vary. Maintaining clean, cold water levels up to the bouquet tie is vital, and keeping flowers away from heat sources like radiators and extreme cold near frozen windows is also necessary.

Furthermore, environmental factors play a role. Avoid placing flowers near fruits and vegetables, as they emit ethylene, a gas that accelerates flower aging. A lesser-known tip is to refrigerate flowers overnight, mimicking the cool temperatures of flower shops, which can significantly prolong their freshness.

Finally, when trimming stems, use a sharp knife or pruner instead of scissors to avoid crushing the stem and impeding water uptake.
