Flooding of Garden Plots and Homes in Leningrad Region Due to Cyclone

The Leningrad region is grappling with widespread flooding affecting garden plots, vegetable gardens, and homes across five districts following the onslaught of the “Veit” cyclone on June 9th.

As of the night of June 12th, the situation remained critical in several settlements, with residents of garden non-profit partnerships (SNTs) within the Kobrinsky massif, including “Brigantina-2,” “Kobrinskoe,” “Zvezdnoe,” and approximately ten others, reporting significant losses and lack of assistance. Residents express their concern, stating that their crops and property have been damaged, and the floodwater continues to rise despite the passage of three days.

The emergency rescue service of the Leningrad region has reported ongoing monitoring of the flooded areas and offered evacuation assistance to affected individuals.

On June 11th, authorities confirmed that 180 garden plots were flooded, impacting 284 residents across the region. The Gatchinsky district, encompassing Kobrino, was hit the hardest, with at least 85 plots submerged. The Luzhsky, Volosovsky, and Kingiseppsky districts also experienced flooding. Despite the widespread damage, authorities have indicated a gradual decrease in water levels.

Residents of the SNTs voice concerns about the deteriorating sanitary conditions, particularly in Kobrino, where a cemetery is located along the riverbanks. They are urging for professional intervention, including drainage, pumping, or water discharge, to mitigate the crisis. Citizens are actively seeking help from law enforcement to investigate the situation and implement solutions, highlighting instances of water entering homes and reaching knee-high levels.

According to the Phobos center, the “Veit” cyclone brought an extraordinary amount of rainfall to the Leningrad region, with 86% of the monthly average falling on June 9th alone.
