Flies and Fecal Contamination Found on Mikhail Bulgakov Cruise Ship

The “Mikhail Bulgakov” cruise ship has been suspended for 90 days following the discovery of flies and fecal contamination in its water system. The suspension, effective from May 30, comes after a sanitary and epidemiological investigation revealed numerous violations of sanitary and epidemiological welfare legislation.

The investigation, conducted on May 29 by representatives of Rospotrebnadzor, found that the ship’s water did not meet safety standards. Coliform bacteria were detected in the water, and the total microbial count was significantly elevated, indicating fecal contamination. This contaminated water was deemed unsuitable even for washing dishes.

Furthermore, inspectors found evidence of insects on the ship, noting that necessary disinsection measures had not been implemented. Dirty ventilation grilles in the food preparation area and a lack of regular general cleaning were also cited as violations.

The issues came to light after a mass poisoning incident on May 28, when the ship was en route from Moscow with St. Petersburg planned as a destination. Over 100 passengers sought medical attention between May 19 and May 28, prompting paramedics to examine passengers during a scheduled stop in Uglich. Two criminal cases have been opened in connection with the mass poisoning.
