Fewer Russians Can Afford Vacations

Many hotels in Sochi, Russia, are reporting low occupancy rates despite the approaching summer season, as rising costs and competition from international travel options deter Russian tourists. While some guest houses are fully booked, larger hotels are struggling, and experts note an overall weakness in the tourist season.

The popularity of Crimea and Sochi as vacation destinations is changing. A recent survey indicated that Crimea is the most popular alternative to Anapa, while Sochi is the second most popular. However, tourists are finding it increasingly difficult to afford vacations in Sochi due to rising prices.

The cost of travel to Sochi, particularly airfare, has significantly increased, making it more expensive for tourists from distant regions. A round-trip ticket from Moscow to Sochi now costs over 20,000 rubles, while tickets from cities like Irkutsk can exceed 55,000 rubles. Hotel prices are also a concern, with some hotels offering weekly stays for over 100,000 rubles, even with discounts.

The situation is mixed, with some smaller guest houses reporting full bookings, while larger hotels are struggling to fill their rooms. The Chairman of the Expert Council of the AMOS Association of Hoteliers, Dmitry Bogdanov, acknowledges that the season is weak for many hotels despite a positive outward appearance. He attributes this to increased competition from international destinations, as a stronger ruble makes foreign travel more attractive for Russian tourists.

Bogdanov suggests that travelers contact tour operators for help navigating the various options and avoiding scams, as Sochi offers a range of accommodations for every taste and budget. Despite the challenges, Sochi’s beaches are ready, and the city offers diverse activities, from gastronomy and excursions to health and wellness programs.
