Parents must actively control the content their children consume online to protect them from harmful influences and ensure healthy development, according to Yuri Nesterenko, a member of the expert council of the State Duma Committee on Family Protection, Paternity, Maternity and Childhood. Nesterenko emphasizes the importance of parental oversight in shaping children’s character, behavior, and psychological well-being.
Nesterenko highlights the potential dangers of unchecked internet access, where children are exposed to commercial and political agendas, as well as influential figures promoting questionable values. He warns that children often prioritize the opinions of online personalities over those of parents and educators, making them susceptible to manipulation and harmful trends.
The expert advises parents to monitor their children’s social media usage, the content they watch, the games they play, and their online interactions. For children under 3, he suggests limiting cartoon viewing to one hour per day and avoiding video games, except for educational ones. Nesterenko also emphasizes the importance of reading to children and engaging in conversations about the content they consume.
Nesterenko underscores the significance of building trust with children, as it is an essential asset that is easily lost but difficult to regain. By actively monitoring and discussing their children’s online experiences, parents can foster open communication and guide them towards positive influences. He notes a common parental error is allowing children to freely consume content without oversight. This lack of control can negatively impact a child’s development and future prospects.
