Expert Advice on How to Handle Encounters with Bears

Experts warn against feeding bears or approaching them, as this can lead to the animals associating humans with food and becoming dangerous. Ecologist Dmitry Lisitsyn, who has studied brown bears for 30 years, emphasizes that bears should be feared by humans, not attracted to them.

When in bear country, it’s safer to travel in groups, as a larger group increases the chances that a bear will retreat. The smell of humans is a significant deterrent, so being upwind of a bear can help it identify you as a potential threat.

If you encounter a bear, it’s crucial to avoid running, as this can trigger a chase response. Instead, slowly back away, allowing the bear to maintain its calm. If the bear stands on its hind legs, it’s likely trying to identify you, so allow it to catch your scent.

If a bear is approaching, make yourself appear larger by raising your arms or an object and shout loudly to scare it away. A flare can also be effective in deterring an approaching bear.

Never get between a mother bear and her cubs, and under no circumstances should you approach bear cubs, as this can provoke a defensive attack from the mother. If attacked, fight back aggressively, aiming for the face, as this may cause the bear to retreat.

To avoid surprising a bear, make noise while hiking, such as clapping or whistling, especially if the wind is blowing against you. If a bear suddenly appears nearby, it might perceive you as a threat.

The forest is the bear’s home, and understanding their behavior is crucial for preventing dangerous encounters. While bears generally avoid humans, taking precautions and knowing how to react can significantly reduce the risk of conflict.
