A dust devil was captured on video near 2nd Stantsionnaya Street in Novosibirsk’s Leninsky district. According to eyewitness accounts and a video posted on the “AST-54 Black” Telegram channel, the weather phenomenon occurred amid abnormally hot weather.
Tatyana Degtyareva, a first-category meteorologist from the “West Siberian Hydrometeorological Service,” commented on the incident. She stated that such whirlwinds are not unusual for the region, especially during periods of intense heat. The meteorologist emphasized that the strong warming of the ground surface contributes to the formation of these localized phenomena.
In the video, a tall, narrow column of dust can be seen near a road and a parked vehicle. Degtyareva clarified that these dust devils are distinct from tornadoes observed in places like the USA.
Whirlwinds typically occur in hot weather, primarily during the summer, and sometimes in late spring or early autumn. A key factor in their formation is the significant heating of the ground surface, which leads to temperature variations at higher altitudes. This creates the conditions necessary for the development of dust devils.
