Drone Attacks Reported in Multiple Russian Regions as Negotiations Approach

Several regions of Russia experienced drone attacks on June 1st, targeting airports and equipment, although no casualties were reported from these incidents. The attacks occurred against the backdrop of separate terrorist attacks on railway infrastructure. Russia and Ukraine are preparing for a second round of negotiations scheduled for June 2nd in Istanbul.

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that military airfields in the Murmansk, Irkutsk, Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur regions were attacked by FPV drones. Fires involving aviation equipment were reported in the Murmansk and Irkutsk regions, while attacks in other regions were reportedly repelled.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) claimed responsibility for organizing “Operation Web,” which aimed to destroy Russian bomber aviation in the rear. According to the SBU, the operation involved transporting FPV drones into Russia, concealing them in mobile wooden structures on trucks, and remotely opening the structures to launch the drones.

The Irkutsk region experienced its first UAV attack, marking the first such incident in Siberia. Drones targeted a military unit in the village of Sredny, with one strike hitting a building in the nearby village of Novomaltinsk. Authorities blocked a truck believed to be the launch point for the drones. In the Amur region, an attack on the Ukrainka airfield was prevented when a truck with drones caught fire. The Murmansk region reported that air defenses repelled a drone attack, with no casualties.

In addition to the drone attacks, bridges were targeted in the Kursk and Bryansk regions. In the Bryansk region, a bridge collapse onto a passenger train resulted in fatalities and injuries. In the Kursk region, train crew members were injured. Russian authorities are treating both incidents as terrorist attacks.

The upcoming negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are scheduled for June 2nd. The Ukrainian side is reportedly proposing a 30-day ceasefire under international guarantees, along with discussions on prisoner exchanges, security guarantees, and potential NATO accession.

Following the attacks, efforts are underway to address the consequences, security measures have been strengthened, and inspections of critical infrastructure are being conducted.
