Doctor Convicted in Patient Death After MRI With Pacemaker

A doctor in Karpinsk has been found guilty of causing a patient’s death by negligence after the patient underwent an MRI despite having a pacemaker. The Karpinsk City Court sentenced Ashim Uulu Talantbek, an oncologist, to two years of restricted freedom and a three-year ban from practicing medicine.

The case revolves around an incident where the doctor sent a patient with a pacemaker for an MRI scan, a procedure contraindicated for individuals with such devices. The regional court’s press service stated that the doctor had been monitoring the patient since 2021 but was unaware of the pacemaker.

Following the MRI, the patient experienced a disruption in heart rhythm and subsequently died. The doctor did not admit guilt during the proceedings.

The case draws parallels to a separate incident where a Ministry of Emergency Situations official from Kamensk-Uralsky lost his wife due to a medical error involving organ damage and a delayed diagnosis. In that instance, the hospital was ordered to pay two million rubles three years later.
