Detention of Activists Opposing Park Improvements in Moscow

Two activists were detained in Moscow for protesting against improvements in the “Krylatskiye Hills” park, as confirmed by a local resident and park advocate.

The incident occurred during alleged illegal trimming activities within the specially protected green area. One of the detained individuals is reportedly an inspector from Rosprirodnadzor.

The women were transported to the “Krylatskoye” police department, where one of their phones was confiscated. A lawyer is en route to provide them with legal assistance.

Local residents stated that trimming, allegedly conducted illegally with trimmers, was taking place in the park. The detained activists arrived to intervene and halt the work. According to a local resident, mowing in the park is restricted to once a year in the fall after the seeds have ripened due to its SPGA status. Trimmers are permitted only for edging and around obstructions. Activists claim that the work is ongoing.

The “Krylatskoye” police department declined to provide any information regarding the detainees. Activists reported via Telegram that the women were taken to the department under the pretense of a document check.

Concerns surrounding the “Krylatskiye Hills” park improvements surfaced last summer when authorities proposed establishing a sports cluster within the park’s boundaries. Residents fear potential alterations to the SPGA boundaries for construction purposes and the resulting environmental impact.

Previously, another park defender was detained for holding a solitary protest outside the Moscow mayor’s office.
