Krugets, an Alabai dog rescued from the streets of Nizhny Novgorod after being severely overweight, has died despite months of care and weight loss efforts. Volunteers announced his death on July 30th, marking a tragic end to a story that had captured the hearts of many.

The dog’s health unexpectedly deteriorated, and he passed away in the hospital. Until his sudden decline, Krugets had been in stable condition, leaving doctors and volunteers surprised by his passing.

Krugets was discovered in the fall of 2023, unable to move due to his extreme obesity. Weighing around 100 kg, he was believed to have been deliberately overfed before being abandoned.

Volunteers took him in and began the long process of helping him lose weight. Initially, his activity was restricted, and he was placed on a strict diet. As he grew stronger, light exercises were introduced.

After several months, Krugets had successfully lost about half his weight and was ready for adoption. Described as calm and good-natured, he enjoyed human attention.

However, finding the right home proved difficult. Krugets needed special care and a home without stairs due to limb problems. He also showed fear of men, suggesting a traumatic past.

Despite the volunteers’ dedication to his well-being, Krugets never found a permanent home and remained in the shelter until his death. His story serves as a reminder of the consequences of animal neglect.
