Victoria Kirdina, a 19-year-old cyclist from Samara, continues to face severe health challenges stemming from a 2022 accident that left her with serious back and leg injuries. The accident occurred while she was traveling to a competition in Sochi. Her mother is concerned about the lack of progress in opening a criminal case regarding the incident.
The accident took place on December 4, 2022, when Victoria, then 17, was training with a group of cyclists. She was caught between a Niva car and a Mitsubishi Fuso truck.
Following the accident, Victoria was hospitalized and placed in an induced coma due to the severity of her injuries, which included complex fractures of two vertebrae and an open comminuted fracture of the femur. She underwent multiple surgeries, including the insertion of ten screws and a 37-centimeter rod to stabilize her spine and femur.
After the operations, the family faced significant expenses for treatment and recovery. In late 2023, Victoria experienced severe back pain, leading to the removal of the metal structures from her back. However, this resulted in kyphoscoliosis, a curvature of the spine in two planes.
Olga Kirdina, Victoria’s mother, is frustrated that a criminal case has not been initiated regarding the accident. Conflicting accounts of the accident exist. One version suggests the Mitsubishi Fuso truck entered the oncoming lane, causing the collision. Another account claims Victoria, while overtaking the truck, drove into the oncoming lane and collided with a Lada car.
The police reported that the driver of the Niva did not have the opportunity to brake urgently. Therefore, they refused to initiate a criminal case, and the prosecutor’s office of the Krasnodar Territory recognized this decision as legal.
Despite the severity of her injuries, Victoria was denied disability status, which could have provided financial assistance and potentially supported the initiation of a criminal case through the courts. She is currently undergoing rehabilitation and experiences ongoing pain, limiting her future prospects, including her dream of returning to racing in Paralympic sports.
