Cosmetologist Explains How to Protect Skin from Ultraviolet Radiation

Protecting skin from ultraviolet radiation is crucial, especially during the summer months when exposure to the sun is more frequent and intense. Cosmetologist Irina Sedova emphasizes the importance of understanding the dangers of UV rays and implementing proper protective measures.

According to Sedova, spring ultraviolet rays can be more aggressive than those in summer because skin is often unprepared for the sudden increase in sun exposure. This lack of preparation can lead to stress on the skin, increasing the risk of pigmentation, redness, and the appearance of vascular issues.

UV rays stimulate melanin production, which can be uneven and excessive, especially in weakened areas of the skin. Prolonged sun exposure without protection can also damage blood vessel walls, leading to a loss of elasticity and increased susceptibility to redness and rosacea.

To protect the skin effectively, Sedova recommends five key products and practices. First and foremost is the use of sunscreen with an SPF of 40-50 or higher. She stresses the importance of checking the expiration date of sunscreen, as expired products can be ineffective and irritating.

Secondly, she advises switching to a light moisturizer during the spring and summer months. This allows the skin to breathe and prevents clogged pores.

Thirdly, Sedova suggests having an SOS remedy for rashes on hand. Seasonal changes, dietary shifts, and hormonal fluctuations can trigger inflammation, and a spot corrector can help address these issues quickly.

Fourthly, incorporating enzyme peeling into the skincare routine is beneficial. Enzyme peels gently exfoliate dead skin cells without harming the skin’s barrier or blood vessels, making them suitable for sensitive skin.

Finally, Sedova recommends using a tonic to restore the skin’s pH balance after washing. This enhances the skin’s ability to absorb subsequent skincare products. She advises against replacing tonic with micellar water or salicylic acid for daily use.
