Construction of Ekaterinburg’s Problematic Interchange Continues

The completion date for the major interchange construction project in Ekaterinburg has been extended to September 2026. The project, designed to alleviate traffic congestion, is currently over 70% complete.

Despite setbacks including the general contractor’s financial difficulties and legal issues, work continues on the interchange near the Kalina concern. Subcontractors are currently dismantling the old railway bridge and constructing new overpasses.

Dismantling work on the fifth stage of the project, involving a bridge for traffic along the Siberian Highway and Komsomolskaya Street, is underway. Structures are being imported for the installation of a new overpass, and work is being done to rebuild engineering networks.

The original contract price has increased from 6.39 billion to 8.27 billion rubles. Construction began in the fall of 2021, and more than 4.8 billion rubles have been invested so far.

The interchange aims to more than double the capacity of the complex section of the road, increasing it from 5,000 cars per hour to 12,000. The project was developed in 2014 to solve the persistent traffic jams in the area.
