Yana Kreneva, winner of the “You Are Unique” All-Russian beauty contest in the plus size category, has opened up about the challenges and triumphs of raising her 11-year-old son, Matvey, who has an autism spectrum disorder. Despite facing criticism and personal struggles, Kreneva has found strength and purpose in beauty contests, using them as a form of therapy and a platform to advocate for her son.
Kreneva noticed differences in Matvey’s development when he was three years old, observing that he was often withdrawn and did not respond to questions, although he displayed an early understanding of the alphabet. At age five, Matvey was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, a mild form of autism spectrum disorder, coinciding with Kreneva’s divorce, which left her feeling overwhelmed and alone.
Kreneva channeled her despair into action, participating in beauty contests as a way to cope and rediscover her self-worth. These contests provided her with a renewed sense of purpose and motivated her to learn more about autism and how to best support Matvey.
To better understand her son’s needs, Kreneva extended Matvey’s time in kindergarten and pursued studies in child psychology. She implemented structured routines and therapies, which helped Matvey thrive and eventually transition into a mainstream school with a correction class.
Matvey, now preparing for the third grade, is described as intelligent and hardworking, excelling in his studies and enjoying a positive relationship with his younger brother. Kreneva’s ultimate goal is to ensure Matvey’s successful integration into society and his ability to live independently.
Addressing criticism she has received for participating in beauty contests while raising a child with disabilities, Kreneva emphasized that her priority is Matvey’s well-being. She expressed her determination to continue pursuing her dreams and advocating for inclusivity. Kreneva is now preparing to compete in the international “You Are Unique” competition in the UAE.
