Bear Safety Tips: How to React When Encountering a Bear

When encountering a bear, it is crucial to remember that bears generally fear humans and prefer to avoid contact. However, understanding how to react in various situations can significantly reduce the risk of conflict. According to ecologist Dmitry Lisitsyn, bears that become accustomed to human food sources pose the greatest threat.

To avoid attracting bears, never feed them or leave food scraps behind, especially in areas frequented by humans. This includes picnic sites, garbage dumps, and gardens. A bear that associates humans with food will become more persistent and potentially dangerous.

When venturing into bear country, it is advisable to travel in groups. A larger group creates a greater sense of danger for the bear, increasing the likelihood that it will leave on its own.

If you spot a bear, it is essential to ensure that the animal perceives you as a threat. Do not attempt to lure it closer. Allow the bear to identify you through sight and smell, making sure the wind carries your scent towards it.

If the bear is standing on its hind legs and sniffing the air, it is trying to identify you. Slowly retreat, giving the bear space and avoiding any sudden movements.

If the bear makes noises or rustles in the bushes, it may be a warning to stay away. In such cases, it is best to retreat or change your route.

Never run from a bear, as this can trigger a chase. If the bear is approaching, shout loudly and try to make yourself appear larger by raising your arms, a jacket, or an object overhead. Flares can also be effective in deterring an approaching bear.

Avoid approaching bears, especially cubs, as this can provoke a defensive reaction from the mother. If you encounter a cub, make noise and move away immediately.

If a bear attacks, defend yourself with all your might, targeting its face. Cases are known where such resistance has caused the bear to retreat.
