Ilya, a 34-year-old paramedic, shares his experiences working in ambulance services, highlighting the challenges, touching moments, and personal growth he has encountered throughout his career. He initially worked in Perm for 10 years and now works in St. Petersburg.
One of the most challenging aspects of his job involved responding to calls related to dysfunctional families and the removal of children from those environments. He described these situations as emotionally taxing, often involving drug abuse, neglect, and violence.
Ilya recounted instances where he and his team faced aggression and threats, including attacks by animals and intoxicated individuals. These encounters underscored the importance of safety measures for paramedics, with some carrying protective devices.
He also shared a particularly poignant experience at a nursing home, where he witnessed the neglect and isolation of elderly patients. This encounter left him disillusioned and questioning humanity, further complicated by frequent calls from lonely pensioners seeking companionship.
Salary and staff shortages were also significant challenges, leading to excessive overtime and burnout. Ilya eventually resigned from the Perm ambulance service due to these pressures, along with emotional toll.
He was also able to recall one of his first patients passing away inside of the ambulance. Being called to a homeless person in the winter, he provided what care he could but the patient did not make it.
Despite the difficulties, Ilya found ways to cope and improve his well-being. He emphasized the importance of physical activity, sharing his journey of losing 45 kilograms through sports and a healthier lifestyle.
The COVID-19 pandemic was an exceptionally difficult period, marked by increased patient volume, severe illnesses, and emotional strain. The overwhelming workload and the inability to adequately care for patients led to burnout and his decision to leave the ambulance service.
After a break from the profession, Ilya returned to ambulance work in St. Petersburg, finding renewed purpose and motivation. He also created a Telegram channel, “Artery,” to share his experiences and connect with others.
The positive response from his subscribers has been a source of encouragement, motivating him to continue sharing his stories and providing insights into the life of an ambulance paramedic.
